Volume 4

Filmstock: Expired Tri-X 400 and Fuji Pro 400H

Camera: Yashica Mat-124

Lens: 80mm f/3.5

I picked up a Yashica Mat-124 from Craigslist and instantly fell in love. This was my first time shooting 120 medium format film and using a twin lens reflex camera. Looking at a reversed imaged through the waist level viewfinder feels like trying to pilot some old craft and hopefully fire off a shot if all goes well. It’s a camera that makes me want go out and shoot more.

The guy I bought it from gave me a box of expired Tri-X 400 black and white film. I didn’t expect half the shots to turn out as learned to load and advance the camera properly. But I was pleased to find that all 3 of test rolls had great exposures!

The Yashica features a mechanical timer for the shutter so I thought it could be fun to use it for shooting a new round of wedding (re)invite photos.

So yeah, I’m definitely sold on medium format.

These photos were really special to me, especailly since they are shot on the now discontinued Pro 400H stock which is the color palette that initially attracted me to film photography. The photo lab didn’t have any 400H in 35mm but they did have 120, so did I buy this camera just to shoot a roll of Fuji Pro 400H before it was gone as we know it….maybe.

Golden Crown Panaderia, we stoped in after passing this place on our bikes. Highly Recommend! Is there anything more New Mexico than green chile bread!? 1 second exposure, self-timer on tripod.

Forgot the tripod attachment and had to balance the camera…whoops!

Accidentally pulled the film but still managed to create one of my favorite images. 💚
